Providing the right devices to remote workers

When working remotely, it's essential to be equipped with the necessary technological tools to perform assigned tasks. That's why some companies offer assistance to team members in acquiring laptops, cell phones, and/or tablets.

In a physical workplace, the company is typically responsible for providing office space, chairs, desks, computers, whiteboards, and all the supplies. However, when working remotely, we have to use our own stuff. But our computer may have a slow processor, or an old operating system that doesn't support the necessary software for coding or design.

In some cases, purchasing new equipment may not be feasible, which is why the company's device policy is crucial. This article will explain what a device policy is, its benefits, and specifically discuss XOOR's device policy.

In this article:

What is XOOR's device policy like?

One of the challenges of working remotely is ensuring that all team members have the right technology tools to perform their daily tasks without any difficulties. That is why at XOOR we provide laptops, cell phones and tablets as required by their position.

People who join XOOR and do not have the appropriate devices to carry out their tasks may choose to apply for "financed devices" or "devices on loan". To do so, they need to submit a formal request to the Human Resources department, which will then evaluate the request based on the needs of the team member's role and the available resources.

Thus, these are the two options for obtaining equipment through XOOR:

  • Financing: It allows individuals to purchase the necessary equipment and pay for it in equal installments that are automatically deducted from their monthly fee.

  • Loan: With a device loan agreement, team members are provided with the required devices for the duration of their service contract. However, once the contract comes to an end, they must return the devices to XOOR.

Benefits of company-provided devices

When we work with tablets, computers, phones or monitors provided by the company itself, we ensure that we have the right technology for our work needs without spending money on it. That way we can solve tasks in less time and more efficiently.

Keeping projects on track and meeting deadlines boost people's motivation and mood. Plus, providing work tools eliminates the worry and stress of having to pay for them out of our own pockets.

Development teams need laptops with update Intel, Apple Silicon or AMD processors with 8GB of RAM, or more. In addition, in order to start coding without problems, Git and Node.js must be installed, and if necessary, Xcode and/or Android Studio.

Those responsible for UX UI design of applications or software must pay meticulous attention to detail, which requires not only powerful computer processors capable of supporting design programs, but also high-definition monitors to ensure excellence. They may also need mobile devices to perform usability testing in the case of applications that will run on cell phones.

The Quality Assurance area requires computers, phones and tablets to test digital products in all their possible versions: Mac or Windows, Android and iOS. At the same time, it is key that they have Chrome, Safari and Firefox installed to ensure that users have a good experience with all devices and browsers.

Project management, human resources, communication and marketing teams must also have laptops that allow them to perform their tasks efficiently.
